Understanding the math behind the bets you're making is crucial to your success as a bettor! If you generate positive expected value (+EV) with the bets you make, over the long term, basic math proves that you are going to turn a profit.
What quantifies a +EV bet? -- Getting a better price on your bet than the closing "fair odds" price (calculation shown via OddsJam calculator in this video) and/or getting a better final number. This is also known as closing line value.
Examples: (1) you bet a team's money line at +150, they close +100 OR
(2) you bet the spread at +4.5 -110, closing line has +4.5 -160 and +1.5 -110 --- in either case, you're getting a much better value in your bet than what is available in the market right as the game is about to happen - i.e., the market is at its most mature and nothing further can change until the game starts.
