Richard Edward Hurst, 74, was born on July 3, 1948. His strength and commitment to loved ones carried him on a 3-year journey and battle with cancer. On March 4, 2023 while surrounded by loved ones, Ric found peace and rest as his battle finally ended.
He was raised near Sugar Grove, Ohio and graduated Berne Union High School in 1967. His parents, Pearley A. Hurst Sr. and Elsie May (Tignor) Hurst preceded him in death. Also preceding him was his older brother, Pearley A. Hurst Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Yvonne Gore (Worth) of Texas; sisters, Elsie May Edwards and Sandra Kellenbarger (Kevin); brothers, John Hurst (Marlene), Ron Hurst, Kenneth Hurst (Donna), and Michael Hurst (Neda); as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was drafted into the Army at the age of 21 and sent to Vietnam as a Combat Medic. His life was greatly impacted by his time serving. He lost many friends whom he never forgot and mourned greatly. Midway thru life, he was able to reconnect with some of those he served with. The family wishes to thank Jerry Juilfs, Bill Hartman, Terry Ackerman, Terry Beckelic, Dan LaClair and Lieutenant Lamont Meaux for continuing to be his special friends and spending a week each year with him.
We are all so grateful that God put a special family in his life with his coworker, Jenny Martin, her husband Ferd, and their daughters, Morgan and Avery. Patsy Martin was mother to all as well and served him many a dinner. Thank you, Martin family, for taking him under your wing when we could not.
He continued serving the Lancaster community for 30 years at Fairfield Medical Center, first as an Orderly, then in Radiology as a Clerical Specialist. After retirement, Ric went back to FMC to Volunteer 3 days a week. He also served on Lancaster Volunteer Police Department for 14 years and was a member of the Builders Club and NLCC Golf League.
He had a servant’s heart and was a friend to all, as he knew no stranger. Life had not always been easy but he had pulled it together and fought his dragons to become a man who loved God and was loved by those who knew him. We are so proud of his bravery and courage and we love that he was our brother, uncle, and friend.
Extra thank you to those who were on this journey with Ric. Thank you all for your diligence and kindness Dr. K.J. Singh, Dr. Mark Becker, Dr. Bratton, Dr. Avneet Singh, Dr. Lazarus, Dr. Bruce and all the staff and technicians who were part of his treatment.
