(17 Nov 1978) ETA Basque separatists claimed responsibility for assassinating a key Franco-era judge on a Madrid street The shooting of Jose Francisco Mateu, aged fifty eight, raised the number of ETA killings since October the first to twenty one. The judge was shot as he walked through the centre of Madrid. He was the former Chief Justice of the much feared Tribunal of Public Order which tried some eighty thousand people for political offences against the Franco regime.
