I thought that this would be the season that Robert Williams III broke out. A young dude with monster athleticism and tons of potential being molded by one of the best organizations in the league, coming in with a whole offseason to work on his game? That's a recipe for success right there.
Sadly, he ran into a problem that lots of raw players run into: his team was too good, and good teams don't want to give too many minutes to unproven players. This happens all the time, literally ALL THE TIME, and it makes me sad every time. I really wish that teams could just forget about their championship aspirations and try to develop their talent in the most direct way possible: with real, in-game reps. Wins would still be a concern, but it would be easier to win doing this when every other team in the league is doing it as well.
If only there was a league where it was nothing but hungry but scrubby players. Call it, like, the "Good League" or something. Shorten it to "G-League" if you want. Sadly, something like that will never happen.
So Williams didn't really break out this season. He looked fine enough early on, then got injured (another thing that puts the brakes on many promising development processes), and didn't really re-establish himself before the hiatus. A DNP in the first bubble game led to 13 seconds in the second bubble game, and now somehow he has scored 18 points in 18 minutes in the third bubble game? The best scoring game of his career by far? This was unexpected, but welcome. Now if only we could have a similar performance from Tacko Fall.
