The special guest on this week's G-Lounge is Hassan Taherian, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Korea. With the recent lifting of the economic sanctions, Iran has returned to the global community, and this is expected to drive growth for the global economy.
In January 16, the United States of America and the European Union removed the economic sanctions against Iran, allowing the Middle Eastern country, with massive oil reserves, to resume the export of crude oil and natural gas. It's been 37 years since the Iranian Revolution in 1979, and Iran is now able to resume normal trade with other countries in the world.
Ambassador Taherian revealed that large-scale projects are planned for the Iranian petroleum and natural gas sector. He expressed a favorable outlook for Korean enterprises looking to tap the Iranian market, as they have already gained abundant experience and earned a good reputation there.
In response to the question regarding the relations between North Korea and Iran, he said that while North Korea provided military assistance during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), their current relations do not involve any cooperation concerning missiles or nuclear programs.
We also had a chance to talk about the Korean wave (hallyu) that's been taking Iran by storm. The hit Korean drama, "Dae Jang Geum: Jewel in the Palace," recorded an average viewer rating of 90% in Iran when it was aired in 2006. Ambassador Taherian mentioned that he also watched the drama on TV, and recalled that there were virtually no cars on the road during its airing time. He also expressed his wish for the Iranian culture to be widely loved in Korea as well, and explained that the Embassy of Iran in Korea is endeavoring to promote Iranian literature by collaborating with the Department of Iranian Languages at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
