It's June and the Great Crested Grebes are rearing a family of four chicks all stripey black and white like little mint humbugs. They are under a week old and sadly one has already been picked off by the gulls but with fewer mouths to feed the easier the job in hand becomes. The parents take it in turn to ferry them around on their backs snuggled in amongst the feathers safe from harm whilst the other patrols the pond hunting for (at this stage) tiddlers.
What a treasure to observe these elegant water birds bringing up their families year after year on the local fishing ponds.
