Is quite possibly the most iconic mushroom on the planet. I have been fascinated with this mushroom for many years, from its magical mysterious image, to its place in our folklore and history. This much misunderstood mushroom has been used in various ways for centuries. Its common name sake 'fly agaric' refers to its use as a fly killer, the Sami people from Northern Scandinavia are well known for using this mushroom for its psychoactive properties amongst other things. It has been said Viking Berserkers would consume Amanita Muscaria before battle. It is not a classic psychedelic species, it's chief psychoactive compound muscimol is thought by many to be more of a deliriant than an entheogenic compound. The classic psychedelic fungi contain the active compounds psilocin and psilocybin. I have met and read about people online that claim to process the fly agaric for gastronomic use only and so with this in mind global food quest set out once and for all to discover whether amanita muscaria can be considered an edible species.
