Did you know that TfL is spending £30 million to make the tube quieter?
London Underground is one of the noisiest metro systems in the world. According to research published in the Laryngoscope Journal, passengers are exposed to sound pressure levels exceeding 80 decibels, and sometimes even over 100 decibels! For reference, that's like standing next to a chainsaw or an aircraft taking off. 😳
Routine exposure to such noise levels can be hazardous, contributing to sleep disturbance, heart disease, impaired cognitive development, and tinnitus. The World Health Organization even recognizes noise as the second largest environmental health risk in Western Europe, right behind air quality.
So, could the tube's brutal noise soon be a thing of the past? Mayor Sadiq Khan revealed that TfL has been spending £30 million over the last five years on tube noise reduction. This money has been used for rail grinding works designed to smooth out the bumps and abrasions on the tracks that cause those screeching noises.
