Tips to Calm the After-School Meltdown
1. Be understanding. Remind yourself as hard as it is on you they are melting down at home because you make them feel safe.
2. Give them their space at home to chill out. Limit after school activities. Give them much needed downtime.
3. Let the teacher know what is happening at home. Ask them to watch for subtle signs of anxiety.
4. Have a visual communication system in class. Allow your child to have a way to to indicate how they are feeling and if they need a break. Let your child know they need chill-down breaks they can access as needed.
5. Contact their therapy team to help make a plan to help your child cope.
Please remember that after being at school all day our kids come home tired and need to let loose.
They often explode for lack of a better word at home tired and needing to let loose often.
Moms are often the ones who get the worst of this because they feel the safest with us. I know it is hard as a parent, but we are their safe place so it is easier to explode where they are safe.
Often our kids hold it in so hard all day at school trying to do as best they can and do as much as they can following instructions.
By the time they get home they are way past their boiling point.
Here we can go two ways: Some kids need to completely let loose and have little to no structure or routine. Other kids need that very strict routine and structure to get through their difficult evenings.
