Nerve Supply of the Rectum:
The nerve plexus is present on the surface of the rectum surrounded by pelvic fascia. The autonomic nerves that supply the plexus reach the rectum by passing over its surface:
1. Sympathetic nervous supply is from the lumbar splanchnic nerves and superior and inferior hypogastric plexuses.
2. Parasympathetic supply is from S2-4 via the pelvic splanchnic nerves and inferior hypogastric plexuses.
