The origin and meaning of the word “Bethlehem” offers an incredible insight into Jesus Christ’s identity.
Bethlehem was a town mentioned in the Bible in a few places. Bethlehem is the place where King David was born. Bethlehem is also the place were Jesus Christ was born.
Jesus’s birth fulfilled the Old Testament prophecy:
“But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah,
who are one of the little clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to rule in Israel,
whose origin is from of old,
from ancient days.”
Micah 5:2
*Bethlehem Etymology*
This is fascinating. The word “Bethlehem” in Hebrew comes from two words:
beth = beit = house
lehem = lechem = bread
Bethlehem means “house of bread.”
This has an incredible connection to Jesus’s entire life. Years later Jesus would describe himself as the “bread of life.” Christians celebrate his life and death with the breaking of the bread, which is Christ’s true presence. Jesus Christ is the bread of life, which came down from heaven and dwelt among us.
Jesus Christ was born in the house of bread because he is the bread of life!
