”Capriccio Espagnol” began life as a fantasia on Spanish tunes for violin and orchestra. During the summer of 1887, however, the composer completely revised the sketches into the orchestral form in which we know the work today. It was an instant success at the first rehearsal, and at its premiere performance it has to be encored in its entirety. Tschaikowsky wrote that it was a “colossal masterpiece of instrumentation”, an opinion shared by many critics, but Rimsky-Korsakov took exception to this description, referring to it instead as “a brilliant competition for the orchestra”. It continues to live up to either or both of these evaluations.
