The fixture computer had been cruel to Alan Little’s York City as, having travelled down to Bristol for a Friday night fixture, they now endured a midweek trip to Northampton Town.
Northampton had been promoted from Division 3 in the previous season via a dramatic Wembley play-off final victory over Swansea City and, not only that, but this was York City’s first visit to the 7,798 capacity Sixfields Stadium which had opened in 1994.
City got off the worst possible start, conceding a penalty after only six minutes played. Town’s Carl Heggs burst through only to be upended by City keeper Mark Samways, Roy Hunter scoring from the resultant sport kick.
Just after half-time, the Minstermen equalised through Rodney Rowe who scored his third goal in four games and his sixth of the season clipping home an inswinging free-kick.
The game finished 1-1 and was a goal result for City as Northampton would end up reaching the play-offs again at the end of the season.
