That the plot of the show is based on a true story? It’s hard to believe that the bumbling “Gentleman Pirate” Stede Bonnett, who was depicted in the show by comedian Rhys Darby, could have been a real person, but he was! The HBO show starring Taika Waititi, barely touches the surface of the true story that inspired it, but some details depicted in the series are historically accurate. Stede Bonnett did, in fact, refer to himself as the “Gentleman Pirate”, and he did fight alongside Blackbeard for a short period of time. However, the show unsurprisingly takes several creative liberties, with Bonnett’s crew for one, being entirely fictional.
