Aneurysm occur anywhere in the body, irrespective of the specific location. Types of aneurysm are classified on the basis of the layers of vessels wall involved, their morphology, locations, and aetiology.
Abdominal aortic aneurysm is the most common types of aortic aneurysm. It occurs in the aorta running through the abdomen and is asymptomatic most often. Abdominal aortic aneurysm Pathogenesis include Inflammation, smooth muscle cell apoptosis, extracellular matrix degradation, and oxidative stress.
Several Clinical Radiology techniques, discussed in several other sqadia.com video lectures for medical students, such as abdominal ultrasound, abdominal and pelvic CT or angiography are used for the detection of abdominal aortic aneurysm. The Arterial Surgery or vascular surgery procedures for its treatment involves the open aneurysm repair by endovascular prosthesis and EVAR.
That was all about asymptomatic abdominal aortic aneurysm. The symptomatic abdominal aortic aneurysm presents with abdominal and back pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, urinary symptoms, and venous symptoms.
Popliteal aneurysm is a type of peripheral aneurysm that occurs behind the knee. It can be managed by exclusion bypass and inlay repair. Other type of aneurysm discussed in this General Surgery lecture are femoral and iliac aneurysm.
One more condition of concern is arteriovenous fistula. It is defined as an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein. It may be congenital, surgically created for hemodialysis treatments, or acquired due to pathologic process. Various arteritis and vasospastic conditions are also made understandable along with cervical and lumbar sympathectomy.
