Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar paid tributes at the 'Jay Stambh' or victory pillar on the 202nd anniversary of the Bhima Koregaon battle. Hundreds of people gather at memorial every year to mark the battle between the English East India company and the Peshwas which was fought in 1818. Dalits commemorate the British victory as many from their community were part of the British forces. During bicentenary celebrations in 2018 one person was killed and several injured after violence broke out.
