*Crissay-sur-Manse* is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department in central France. It is one of the 'most beautiful villages of France'. The houses are made from white limestone, with mullioned windows. The village is located on the Manse river.
Crissay or Crisse, which in the 9th century was called Chrisseium and Crissiacum in the 11th, was a castellany under Île-Bouchard, and for part of its territory under the archdiocese of Tours. It belonged in the 9th century to the abbey of Cormery, which was confirmed in its possession by the letters of Charles the Bald (between 823 and 877). Bouchard de l'Île was the first known lord and is mentioned in his charter of 1084; after him came Jacques Turpin, in 1120, whose descendants owned the estate until July 1, 1632. On that date, the land was seized by decree against Charles Turpin and awarded to Michel d'Évrard, captain governor of Chinon. The de Beauvaus, then the Choiseuls succeeded him as lords of Crissé during the 18th century.
The castle, partially destroyed during the Hundred Years War, was rebuilt at the end of the 15th century on the foundations of a very old fortress; there remains a 13th century keep with underground refuges dug underneath. The seigniorial chapel dates from the beginning of the 11th century. The church of Crissay was built in 1527 by Jean Turpin, on the ruins of an old chapel which depended on Saint-Epain. It was consecrated by Antoine de la Barre, Archbishop of Tours, and restored in 1867. The town of Crissay retains some beautiful dwellings from the 15th and 16th centuries, which attest to its past importance.
