Duckweed offers quite a few benefits, such as acting as a natural water purifier, absorbing excess nutrients, providing shelter and shade for baby shrimp and fish, and even serving as a great food source for shrimp.
However, this incredible floating plant has its downsides. Its rapid growth can quickly turn it from a charming accent into an overwhelming invasion if left unchecked. Once duckweed takes hold, it can be extremely difficult to eliminate entirely, requiring diligent maintenance to control. Even leaving a single leaf behind can result in it multiplying rapidly and spreading all over again.
Duckweed can also grow so fast that it covers the entire surface of a tank, blocking light from reaching submerged plants. Since aquatic plants rely on light for photosynthesis, they may struggle to survive without it.
Additionally, dense mats of duckweed can limit oxygen exchange at the water’s surface, potentially causing issues for your tank’s inhabitants.
And here’s something cool… Duckweed is a superfood and also a great food source for shrimp!
