Just 8 KM away from Quito sits an active volcano. Take the teleferico (or TelefériQo) to Cruz Loma to start your climb to Rucu (sometimes spelled 'Ruku'), one of Pichincha volcano's peaks. Pichincha volcano gives the province its name. It's one of the highest mountains in the province. Pichincha has 2 peaks, Ruku ("old person") and Guagua ("baby"). We decided to climb the closer Rucu, but Guagua is probably the most interesting of the 2, or at least the most dangerous. It's an active volcano that last erupted in 2001 when steam shot into the air for 20 minutes straight. Fortunately, lava hasn't flowed from Pichincha volcano since 1660, and even then, because of the way the peaks are setup, no lava hit Quito. However, the city was buried in a foot of ash.
Even if you're not up for the climb to Ruku, definitely take the teleferico (cable car in Spanish) for the best views of Quito. On a clear day, you'll be able to see several volcanoes. You can also have a quick swing at the top of the world. This is one of the coolest photos you can take in Quito. Quito's cable car is the highest in South America. It costs $8.50 for the return trip. There's a cafe and restaurant at the top, a souvenir shop, and various short hikes to look-out points. Just make sure you go on a day that's clear, and it helps to acclimatize in Quito for at least a day (the top of the teleferico is 4050 metres).
If you are going to climb to the peak 'Ruku', be sure to pick a beautiful day, bring sunscreen, a hat, lots of water, a snack, and prepare for a difficult 10 km hike that elevates about 650 meters. It takes about 4 hours to get to the top, and another 2 hours to get back. The entire hike you'll be treated to incredible views of Ecuador's paramo (grasslands).
