Here's a way you can fade down an LED when a transistor turns off by putting a capacitor in series with the transistor (47µF capacitor and 2N2222 NPN bipolar junction transistor BJT in this case) base to emitter. Step by step build of this circuit will hopefully make it easier to understand.
