After a long day previously travelling from Yorkshire via the Eurotunnel, we arrived in our motorhome at the aire in Le Crotoy. If you use the All the Aires book, this site is Le Crotoy 1 near the marina/ port. It's really well signposted in the town (make sure to look out for the Camping Car sign). A 5-minute walk takes you into the bustling town centre where the fresh fish stands really are something else!
Le Crotoy is on the historical Baie de Somme, in the French department of Hauts-de-France. Historically it is the place where Joan of Arc was held prior to her trial in Rouen and where Jules Verne lived, author of Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Around the World in 80 days and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Seas.
A quaint fishing town, still very popular for its beaches and views over to St Valery-sur-Somme and Point de Hourdel (which are both places I would also recommend for a visit and where you can see we visited in our videos from later in our French Road Trip).
After a good night's sleep, we then set off on a 3-hour journey via Rouen to Chartres, famous for its 11th-century gothic cathedral. We enjoyed a wander around the antique market held each Sunday afternoon and made our way around the winding streets. If you like Durham, Chester or York then Chartres is definitely a place to add to your list! It's definitely in my top ten towns in France.
