What's up, everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna be checkin' out the Yakima FreshTrack 4 ski and snowboard carrier. You can see where I have it set up on our roof rack right here. That way, we can get our skis and snowboards out of the vehicle. That way, there's more leg room for everybody inside. Plus, if you're just getting done using 'em, you don't bring in a mess on the inside.
So you can easily just throw these up on your roof and hit the road. Let's check 'em out. Right out the gate, I wanna talk about a feature that this one has that some of the other skis and snowboard carriers I've messed with do not have, and that's the ski rise. You can see that it's up at an angle, and that's so that if you have the larger bindings that are gonna make contact with your roof, that is not a problem. You see how it's tilted up at that angle, giving us more room.
So this binding doesn't even come close to the roof, and we can fit everything in here that we wanna take on a trip. Now, that ski rise is something you have to set up before you install this on the roof of your vehicle. So when you go to put this on the roof rack, you wanna make sure that, you know, if you know you have those bindings, you need that space, you can set that up. And when you go to put this together, you put it with that little attachment adapter there-- In there so that gives it that rise. Otherwise though, it operates the exact same way.
You have the big button here on the outside. So where, you know, if you're going skiing or snowboarding, you're probably gonna have big gloves on. And if it was like a little bitty button like on some of those other ski carriers, it'd be hard to kinda get or manipulate that with your hands. You wouldn't have your fingers to actually hit that, so you can just use your palm. Pop it open.
I like that this comes up on its own and it stays lifted up, so you don't have to worry about holding this with one hand while you're trying to load the skis or the snowboards. That could be a pain. So I like the look of these, you just push 'em with your palm, prop right up very easily. Everything you got the rubber padding in here too on both sides on top and bottom. That way, it's not gonna scratch up your snowboard or your skis, and it gets a nice tight hold on it. You'll see when you go to push it back down, it's got a ratchet. You'll see that button click, lets you know it's down there and tightened up. So we've got both of those. And just to show you, I'll shake the whole vehicle back and forth with how they are attached to our roof rack, so they're not going anywhere. So looking at the ski and snowboard carriers. I've worked with several of 'em. I have a few expectations going into it of what they should do. You know, I know a lot of people like getting the rooftop boxes instead, they'll throw their skis and snowboards in there just to keep them fully protected from the elements. But those are quite an investment. So there's a lot gonna go into that. Maybe you don't ski that much, these seem to work really well. I like how nice and tight they are on the vehicle. I can shake it back and forth easily, and there's no rattling or anything or movement. I like how easy the hand knobs and stuff are, so there's not really a tool installation. Unless you're gonna do the set screws, then that you do have to climb up there with a tool to do that. But I think it's worth it. If you're gonna leave it up there all the time, why not do that That way, it's secure. The hand knobs can't turn so that nobody can ruin it when you're not around. I'm glad they included that. I like some of the features of the FatCat Evo a little bit better, just having the hand knobs on the inside. So then when you close it and lock it, you don't have to do the set screw thing or worry about hand knobs. But otherwise it still does a great job. I like that it's got the rise of the ski rise on the other side. It's something that I didn't necessarily think of right away when we we're using it with this vehicle, it's clear that the bindings weren't gonna work out right. Or I could maybe get it just right if I mess with it a whole bunch. Just to kinda take that headache out of it. You got that rise, plenty of room there. I was able to load it very easily and get it locked down and now I'm ready to hit the road. So I think these are gonna work out really well for you.
