FIND THE TEXTURE
Last August we went to the southern hemisphere to ride in Chile. It was one of the coolest experiences. The terrain was so different from what we are used to back home. So many times we said it felt like we were riding on the moon.
From that trip came this video. A year later this is still the video people most reference when they meet us in person. Telling us how much this little saying “find your texture” has helped them, which is pretty neat!
The phrase Find Your Texture is specifically for very steep icy runs. I know the camera doesn’t make this run seem steep but it was. Looking over the edge and looking straight down a black diamond icy slope is scary especially when you are 5, as you can hear in her voice in the beginning.
On steep runs you are able to see where the snow has sluffed off and left a flat, icy patch of snow. You can turn on ice but it is a lot harder to dig in your edge, especially on a snowboard. Even more difficult for Cashy being so light, it’s very tough to set an edge on an icy patch. That is why you find the texture on the slope. So you can turn into your edge and not lose control. The texture is the bumps or soft powder spots on the run. Not to be confused with moguls which are usually hard, icy, big mounds on a run.
We have done a lot of sensory learning with Cash since she was little so she understands what texture is. Once I told her to look for it she was ready to conquer a new feat and kept repeating it to herself every time she got on some steep slopes during our trip.
Sometimes it’s the little phrases we learn that can make all the difference in retaining what we learn.
