At the beginning of this month, Wild Horse Connection’s Nevada rescue volunteers spotted a one-day-old foal who had become separated from her mom. The volunteers watched her move from mare to mare in an attempt to nurse, without success.
The little foal tried to keep up with the roaming band - but soon she was overcome with exhaustion and dehydration. She laid down on the ground to sleep. As she slept, the bands continued on. If not for the rescue team, she would have awoken alone in the wilderness. The team knew that if they didn’t act, this little one would have no chance of surviving.
Rescue volunteers took the filly to an emergency vet, where tests confirmed severe dehydration and lack of colostrum; after receiving an IV catheter and plasma infusion, she showed improvement and maintained a strong appetite despite needing a second IGG infusion.
We’re thrilled to share that our resilient filly has been released from emergency care and is now fostered by the same kind volunteer who adopted Roxy (aka the “spicy tater tot”). This new companionship will benefit both foals immensely, and they’re getting on well already! AWHC was glad to support her vet care with donations from our Foal Rescue Fund. A huge thank you to everyone who supports our Fund—your generous contributions make stories like this possible!
Thank you Wild Horse Connection and dedicated rescue volunteers for your incredible work!
