Finally some good COVID-19 news! Scientists from the University of Oxford in England have been working overtime to create a vaccine for COVID-19, and now they reckon they're getting close! They say their vaccine, called ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, has had good results in its first human trials. So far, more than 1000 people have been given the vaccine, and it led to them making antibodies and T-cells that can fight the virus.
But while the findings are hugely promising, to see if it really works they're going to have to test it on a much larger scale. More than 10,000 people in the UK and 30,000 in the US are set to take part. While the trial's still in its early stages, the UK's ordered 100 million doses so it can start vaccinating people as soon as it's ready to go.
This isn't the only vaccine being made and tested. 150 potential vaccines are being developed around the world, but the early success of this one is a good sign and scientists say we could be using it by the end of the year.
POLAR BEARS STUDY
Scientists say polar bears could become nearly extinct by the end of the century. A new study's found melting sea ice is forcing them onto land for longer periods of time and away from their main source of food: seals! Without deliciously fatty seals to eat, polar bears can't survive, and today there are just 25,000 left in the arctic. But it's not all bad, scientists say if we act now to reduce climate change it could help save the species.
NEW YORK REOPENS
Early on during the pandemic, New York City in the US was a COVID hotspot. But infection rates have been going down for a while and the city's now started phase 4 of its reopening, with tourist attractions like the Statue of Liberty finally opening to the public again.
T20 POSTPONED
If you've been hanging out to see Australia try to win the T20 world cup on home soil, you're going to have to wait. Because of COVID-19, the world cup won't be played until at least October next year, and while we were meant to host the tournament this time, India was meant to host it in 2021 and that's been pushed back another year, too. So is Australia still hosting when it actually happens? Well, we just don't know, the ICC hasn't decided yet.
INCREDIBLE BEN STOKES
Still on cricket, and England's had a huge test win over the West Indies to level their series 1-all. And it's mostly thanks to all-rounder Ben Stokes, who put together a match for the ages. He scored 176 in the first innings and took a wicket, then followed it up with an unbeaten 78 from just 57 balls in the second. Oh, and then took a couple more wickets just for good measure. England won by 113 runs, and Stokes impressed his captain enough to earn a new nickname: Mr Incredible.
WIPEOUT OF THE YEAR
Surfing fans haven't had a lot to look forward to ever since the World Surf League cancelled its championship tour. But the competition's not over just yet, because the league wants you to judge the wipeout of the year award. It's nominated the 5 best surfing fails. They're all epic, but none of them are pretty. You've got a couple of days to vote before the winner's announced on July 27th.
YELLOW TURTLE
This might sound like some bizarre unnatural monstrosity, but it's just one of nature's rare colourful creatures! A bright yellow turtle was found in a forest in India, and experts reckon it might be an albino mutation of an everyday turtle!
SKY BALLOONS
Colourful creations took to the sky over Russia, for the 19th annual International Aeronautics Festival Golden Ring, a title nearly as big as the balloons themselves. The festival was delayed because of COVID-19, but participants said it was worth the wait!
BRITISH PM DRAWS A LADYBUG
And British Prime Minister Boris Johnson took a turn at creating his own colourful creation while visiting a school in the UK. The result was a rather scary looking lady bug. Well, isn't that… nice?
