Yesterday saw over a thousand people descend on De Montfort University's Queen Building for the annual Green Light Festival. The festival which aims to encourage sustainable living was set up by members of Transition Leicester and Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire. Both groups aims are to make the city low-carbon and environmentally friendly.
Chris Shaw a volunteer from the organising committee spoke about the reasons why its so important to educate the public about sustainability "we are having a massive impact on planet earth, and its really really essential what we consider what we do as a species, if you bare in mind that in a couple of years time by 2050 the world population will have increased by 50%, national resources are running out"
"if we don't do something around sustainability and how to live more effectively and in harmony with the planet, we are going to have a major problem"
The festival featured over 40 interactive stalls and had more than 20 expert talks and numerous practical workshops, all with the aim of helping local people understand more about going green. There was also a number of debates in the University's lecture theatres, which discussed controversial topics on fracking and air pollution. The day also featured numerous musicians and performers.
