Things to Do in Estes Park:
1. Trail Ridge Road stretches 48 miles long through the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park and rises to an elevation of 12,183 feet, higher than any other through road in America. With plenty of wildlife and scenic overlooks to enjoy along the way, be sure to carve out a few hours of your day to take your time with this designated All-American Road.
2. Try your hand at fly fishing in the Big Thompson River. Estes Mountain Shop has plenty of rental gear and everything you need to get started!
3. Estes Park Mountain Shop also rents bicycles, hiking gear, camping gear and much more. Grab a few bikes there to ride around Estes Lake and cruise downtown.
4. We hiked to Sky Pond from the Bear Lake Trailhead. This trail is just under 10 miles round trip and reaches a 10,900 foot elevation. The hike is labeled "strenuous" by Rocky Mountain National Park and includes a 100 foot scramble up a waterfall just reaching before Glass Lake and Sky Pond. Amazing views, well worth it. Start early!
5. As Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick fans, staying at The Stanley was a unique experience with plenty to do around the Hotel from ghost tours to illusionist shows and more. The Hotel is jammed packed with interesting history and tales of residual spirits that linger about. Get on a waiting list to stay in Room 217, the same room Stephen King did when he found his inspiration for The Shining or inquire about another room known for its hauntings to get the full experience. Take pictures! Especially in the Historic Hotels lobby mirrors, commonly referred to by staff as the 'vortex.' We returned home with an unexplainable figure in one of ours. I wouldn't have believed it if I had not seen it for myself. You don't have to be a guest at The Stanley to take any of their tours. The Stanley is always open to the public, but make your reservations early as tours tend to fill quickly.
Bonus: Last but not least, tour the downtown area of Estes Park. It's full of tasty treats for your every sweet tooth craving, great food and craft beer, and loads of neat stores for shopping.
