FACT-CHECK: 🔬
Following yesterday's video, I was asked by a number of you to elaborate on the claim and why I felt it was problematic.
I know it’s 10 min long. Unfortunately to address inaccurate claims it often takes much more energy than was required to create the claim in the first instance (Brandolini's law)

The initial claim (that falls are the #1 cause of death, which is in fact inaccurate) is being used to set the stage for this idea that we need to be eating more protein, particularly animal protein. @drgabriellelyon seems to be certainly a big champion for red meat, and while my view is some red meat can feature in a healthy diet (per the guidelines), the best evidence we have suggests it’s not a food people we should be encouraging people to double down on. Not if we do want to address the leading causes of death as outlined in this video.
I want to make it clear I’m not downplaying falls or sarcopenia/frailty. They are important - I used to treat patients after acute hip fractures when I was a physio. But we can’t get carried away here a) falls aren’t the major reason for premature mortality and b) the causes of sarcopenia and frailty are multi-factorial. People fall because of polypharmacy, poor vision, cognitive issues, balance issues … and yes of course loss of muscle mass and strength. But even when we look at the loss of strength most of this can be attributed to people not moving against resistance (a sedentary lifestyle), not a protein deficiency. You could put protein in the water of all aged-care facilities across the US and without other changes, there’s no reason to believe we would see rates of Sarcopenia drop by any significant level. I’ll cover this in more detail in a coming video.
The bottom line is the top cause of death is CVD. And as Dr Lyon says, this is what we should really care about. Consistent evidence shows eating fewer calories from animal protein, particularly processed & unprocessed red meat, in exchange for calories in plant protein from legumes, nuts and seeds can lower the risk of CVD.
So why isn’t this being discussed?
