Yung Gleesh is officially serving notice: "2018 my year-know that. I'm coming back motherfuckers! I let you goofy, bitch-ass n***a do whatever you wanted. I sat back and let you do it. Don't think you did it. I let you do it. Now I'm back motherfuckers." You have been warned.
During a recent visit to MASS APPEAL HQ, the D.C. rapper who made his name with a slew of mixtapes-including 'Your Favorite Rapper's Favorite Rapper' and three editions of 'Cleansides Finest'-spoke on his early days as co-founder of the go go band TOB. "Go go don't really like rap," Gleesh explained, keeping it 100 as always. "They ain't accept that shit."
His last day with TOB happened to be the same day Obama was inaugurated. "I was already tired of it," he admits in his Open Space interview. But he admits that the rhythms of go go shaped his flow as an MC. "That's where my rap comes from-the stuttered, short, non-lyrical, all about the beat," says Gleesh.
Elsewhere in the same interview Gleesh speaks on how Gucci Mane tried to sign him. "That's my idol," he says of Guwop, who first heard about the D.C. rapper from ATL kingmaker Coach K.
"He let me perform before him," Gleesh recalls. "He was like, 'I love this n***a. I'm tryin' to sign that n***a!' Shit like that." Gleesh soon found himself in an Atlanta studio with other Gucci-approved artists like Young Thug, Peewee Longway, Dolph, Migos and Scooter. Not long after Gucci was incarcerated, whereupon, "We all went our own separate ways and turnt the fuck up."
Check out the latest Open Space to hear about all of the above, plus Gleesh's exploits with Fredo and A$AP Yams.
