CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A new study about heavy drinking found nine out of ten people who drink excessively were not alcoholics.
The study by doctors at the Centers for Disease Control found one in three adults were considered excessive drinkers, and most admitted they binge drank on several occasions. Excessive drinking was defined as consuming eight or more drinks a week for women or 15 or more drinks for men.
Too much alcohol can lead to liver problems, cancer and heart disease. It's responsible for 88,000 deaths in the U.S. each year.
Dr. Robert Brewer from the CDC alcohol program said, "Excessive alcohol use is a huge public health problem in the U.S. It kills a large portion of people in the prime of their lives."
Doctors at the CDC recommend higher taxes and regulations on liquor stores to help excessive drinkers cut back alcohol intake.
