(23 Mar 2017) China has confirmed that it has suspended the import of beef from Brazil after a scandal over allegations of bribery in Brazil's meat-packing industry to allow the sale of expired meat.
Sun Jiwen, a spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce, told a news conference on Thursday that China is "highly concerned" about the issue.
China is the largest importer of Brazilian meat, accounting for about one-third of Brazil's meat export.
At a meet wholesale market east of China's capital city of Beijing, some Brazilian ox tongue and rib was still on sale at a few of the hundreds of shops.
Most of the traders said they were not selling any Brazilian meat.
