We got behind the wheel of the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition for a brief time while in Montana (per Cars.com’s ethics policy, we pay for all travel and lodging at such manufacturer-sponsored events). Unfortunately, Road Test Editor Brian Normile’s time was limited mostly to on-road driving — not the AEV Edition’s natural environment — but he did get a chance to see how it drives with the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel powertrain.
The result is a comfortable if sloppy on-road experience, with impressive power delivery and smoothness from the diesel. Unfortunately, there’s also a lot of tire noise when driving on pavement — like, a lot a lot — and not that much grip, either. The Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition is not a Raptor fighter.
What it is instead is a comfortable, luxurious and capable pickup truck that would be a pricey but very good start for a dream overlanding rig.
