my jeep cj7 is a little more unconventional when it comes to checking, adding or changing your transmission fluid or oil. you pop the hood and you can't find the dipstick for the transmission fluid. this is because there is not one. fluid must be added by removing a plug on the side of the transmission itself.
i have a 1980 jeep cj7 with a 258 inline six and a t176 transmission and a dana 300 transfer case.
i already had the skid plate off because i was replacing my motor mounts and transmission mount. i was about to put it back on, but i figured i might as well change my tranny fluid out before i did so (because i don't really want to take it off again anytime soon). with the skid plate it place, it would be awfully difficult to access any of these plugs.
anyway, i'm glad i did. i drained that transmission fluid and it was nasty. figured i might as well do the transfer case while i was at it. (its fluid was not nearly as bad, however).
drain plug and fill plug for the transmission are both large square-headed bolt. i used a 9/16" cresent wrench (because i have no square sockets). my fill plug was on the passenger side of the transmission
fill plug for the transfer case is also this 9/16" square bolt. but the drain plug needed an allen wrench to remove.
manual says to use 80w-90 oil, which i could not find. i found many people recommended gl4 transmission fluid, so i bought four quarts at napa.
capacity for my jeep transmission and transfer case was 3.5 quarts. 2.5 quarts in the transmission, and a quart in the transfer case.
camerawork is terrible as i was dealing with the worst possible awkward angles and lighting ... but hopefully this might help someone looking to add some oil to their jeep transmission
