a simple one reagent preparation of phenol

this shows the importance of working outside when working with anything carcinogenic and flammable because there's a chance that something will go wrong.

warning ⚠️
phenol solidifies at 41°c it condenses around the gas outlet causing an over pressure. this pushes out the thermometer causing the 211°c phenol/salicylic acid to escape. when this falls down and touches the flame the whole flask catches alight. I was prepared for something like this. I was wearing a respirator with filters rated for organic vavour and a fire extinguisher close by. luckily by then I had collected a good amount of my desired product.
