In December 2023 we spent two weeks in Gdansk, Poland. We had a great time exploring the city and loved our time there. While there, we took a train to nearby to see the Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork. This 13th-century Teutonic castle and fortress has never been breached. According to some sources, Malbork is the largest castle in the world measured by land area. According to other sources, it is the largest brick castle in the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Malbork was originally constructed by the Teutonic Knights in the late 13th century. Throughout history it was sold to King Casimir IV of Poland, fell under Swedish occupation, then under German rule until the end of WWII in 1945. After this it was returned to Poland but had suffered heavy damage during WWII. It required extensive restoration. In 1997 it was declared a World Heritage Site. This video includes photos of our exploration of Malbork Castle.
