We can use what we know about writing very large numbers in scientific notation to write very small numbers in scientific notation. We write the small quantity as the product of a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10, times a power of 10 (with a negative exponent). We show how we can write a very small number in scientific notation by using division. Each time we divide by 10, we reduce the exponent by 1. Moving the decimal point left, the exponent decreases. Moving the decimal point right, the exponent increases.
