This talk is presented by Andy Sedgwick, an
Arup Fellow and Director who has lead on the engineering designs on some of London and Europe’s most well-known buildings. Andy’s career at Arup spans some 33 years.
The hi-tech school of architecture had its focus in London in the 70’s and 80’s. A hypothesis suggests this is partly as a result of the access to great engineers in the city at that time; Rice, Hunt and Newby. Andy believes that the converse is equally true, exposure to the objectives and working methods of hi-tech design has educated a generation of London engineers, where every detail matters through a rigorous and collaborative approach.
Cantering through a timeline of buildings which includes Lloyds of
London, The Louvre Museum, Art Institute of Chicago & the British
Museum, Andy’s philosophical point is that by learning from each
other through relationships based on design, where there is a
symbiosis between the engineering & architecture, London has, by
default, produced some of the world’s best architects and engineers.
