SUGGESTED LEAD IN:
In an abbreviated visit to the Philippines, US President George W Bush on Saturday promised to help the country defeat terrorism by aiding in the modernisation of its under-equipped military.
He and Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo agreed to beef up their military cooperation, including intensifying an already existing partnership to boost mixed efforts to defeat al-Qaida-linked militant extremist groups that operate in the islands.
Thousands of university students, farmers and other activists rallied against Bush's visit.
The protesters called for an end to US military aid to the Philippines - which they alleged was being used to suppress human rights - the pullout of US troops from Iraq, and an end to joint military exercises with US troops.
SUGGESTED VOICE OVER:
00 02
President Bush arrived in Manila amid high security concerns about potential terrorist activity.
00 08
It was the second stop in a six-nation tour of Asia and Australasia that Bush hopes will gain military and financial support for the US occupation of Iraq.
00 17
During a whirlwind visit, Bush held talks with the Philippines president, addressed Congress and attended a state dinner.
00 24
He praised Arroyo's stance against terror and said the Abu Sayyaf extremist group posed a dangerous threat.
00 32
But the president's visit was marred by protests.
00 35
His speech before Congress was delayed nearly an hour because of concerns about large crowds - both supporters and protesters - along his motorcade route.
00 44
About three thousand demonstrators marched to the House of Representatives where Bush was scheduled to speak.
00 50
The crowd burned US flags and an effigy of the US leader.
00 54
The demonstrators were cordoned off by security forces, who effectively blocked Bush's view of the protest
as the motorcade passed.

SOUNDBITE (English) Satur Ocampo, Sectoral Representative:
"We don't want him in the Philippines and we don't want his type of war."
01 06
Seven legislators left the hall at the start of Bush's speech, after plans for a larger walkout fizzled.
01 12
The president gave no indication that he had noticed them or the demonstrators.
01 17
Eight hours later he was on his way - flying to Thailand where is scheduled to attend an APEC summit in Bangkok.
