For the past few days, the internet is crazy over Mr Heng Swee Keat’s East Coast Plan. Speech of Mr #HengSweeKeat on Nomination Day was around 1 and a half minutes long, but everyone only remembers the whole 16 seconds speech regarding the #EastCoastPlan for #EastCoastGRC
In this video, instead of teasing him and make fun of the speech, why don’t we learn something from Mr. Heng’s experience in term of public speaking?
Ladies and gentlemen, next time if his situation happens to you, you have two options. Take a short pause to recollect your point. If you still can’t remember it, the second option is to move on to the next point, don’t dwell on it. If you memorize your speech word by word and you are trying to remember the next exact word, don’t! Improvise it on the spot. Do this properly and no one will notice the change.
It’s always recommended to mind map the skeleton of your speech before your show time; Key points of your opening, content number 1, 2, 3 and conclusion. This is to familiarize the flow. When needed, you can wing it professionally.
Practice makes progress, don’t be discouraged by this kind of experience. I am sure we can handle it much better after going through the bad experience. Big thanks to Mr Heng for the important lesson too.
