All of the Singer sewing machines in this video were metal bodied and with the exception of the Singer Futura their critical inner workings were also made of steel or toughened alloy. These all-metal machines were designed to last a lifetime and many have done just that.
However from the early 1970s onwards, some of the gearing and critical internal parts of many Singer models were made out of plastic and although the machines were technically advanced at that time, they were not designed for repair, maintenance and durability - and as such their working lives have proven to be much shorter.
