A demonstration of the Travelling Post Office hauled by 92214.
The train was running at somewhere near 45 m.p.h.
In 1960 or thereabouts, restrictions were put on the speed of these locos, as they had been clocked at around 90 m.p.h.
Heavy braking was required at Ruddington in order to slow down in time for their arrival at Nottingham Victoria Station!
No.92184 hauling the relief 'Heart of Midlothian' from Edinburgh to King's Cross averaged a fraction below 86 m.p.h. whilst descending Stoke bank and touched 90 m.p.h. at one point.
At that speed, the 5 foot driving wheels were rotating at 8 1/2 times per second!.. Remember, this was a loco designed primarily for freight haulage!
[Source of information was from the 1960 'Locospotters Annual'.]
