Using measurement to drive improvements in patient safety

Lessons learnt from the implementation of the NHS Safety Thermometer - NHS England announced a two year programme to implement the NHS Safety Thermometer across NHS England. A national CQUIN scheme provides financial incentive to ALL providers of NHS care to measure four common complications of care (harms) at the point of care, one day per month. We describe the rationale for this large scale data collection, learning from implementation in particular, the strengths and limitations of the method and its contribution to patient safety.
