No crying here, only tears of joy when you see how easy it is to make a dark, melancholy, and otherwise emotional piano sound in seconds! Using Ivory II's Timbre Shift feature, you can effectively "borrow" the timbre of a note without actually changing its pitch.
To create this sound in Ivory II, we lowered the timbre shift to -7 (7 semi tones below the actual note). This alone creates the darkness in the sound. Next, we added a few decibels of "Key Noise" for authenticity and to hear more of the felt of the hammers. Key noise really brings the piano alive by adding more of the "human factor". Finally, we added some reverb to bring it all together. We went fairly conservative with the reverb in this video, and invite you to experiment with the reverb amount for the exact sound you want.
We're using Ivory II American Concert D in this video, but this trick will work with any Ivory II piano.
