The most extensive and abundant watercourse formed in the interior of the island, in the middle of the mountains and which flows into the ocean, is the so-called Ribeira da Janela. This name comes from a small islet that rises near the mouth of this stream and that at its top there is a natural boulder that resembles a window in everything.
Initially the parish of Ribeira da Janela was called «Janela da Clara».
Not far from the sea coast are the islets of Ribeira da Janela. One of these islets gave rise to the name of the parish and stream.
The highlights of this parish are: Penedo, Casais de Baixo, Casais de Além, Casais da Igreja and Eira da Achada.
The lands of Ribeira da Janela are extremely fertile and are responsible for most of the production of agricultural products that are cultivated in Madeira. They are irrigated through the Lombo Gordo and Cedros levadas.
It is in the hills of this parish that the famous site of Fanal stands out, famous for its amazing lake, dense trees and stunning landscapes where the heart of the Laurissilva is visible.
