Martin Rowe wrapped up his first British Rally Championship title on his home event in 1998. With the Group A8 cars of the Irish Tarmac Championship contenders shunned by the Manx organisers, a handful of Irish Group N, Historic and Modified challengers took the ferry and each of the three ITRC titles were secured on the island with Derek McGarrity winning the Group N title, Dessie Nutt the Historics and Uel Williamson, the Modified.
