Easy Knitting Math Tutorial:
Step 1. Measure your gauge. I measured 17 sts per 4", versus the pattern recommendation of 14 sts per 4".
Step 2. Determine what size you want the final garment to be (determine amount of positive ease). I decided I want to end up with a circumference of 46" (for 6" of positive ease).
step 3. Use your gauge (from step 1) and your finished circumference (from step 2) to calculate the stitch count for the body using this formula:
Final circumference / gauge length x stitch gauge = stitch count for body
46" / 4" = 11.5 x 17 sts = 195.5
Step 4. Use this body stitch count to determine the size to knit, based on the body stitch counts in the pattern. Be sure not to use the stitch counts that include the sleeve stitches! You want to make sure you are looking at the stitch count for after you separate for sleeves. For me, the closest stitch count was 196 stitches for Size 5, so I am knitting Size 5.
Pattern is Ranunculus by Midori Hirose
