Rescuers were trying to find four people still missing after a deadly landslide hit the town of Casamicciola Terme on Italy's holiday island of Ischia, with houses brought down and mud submerging the streets.
The death toll from the landslide caused by torrential rain over the weekend rose to eight including a baby.
“Everything in the valley is still buried. I've seen ten earthquakes and floods, and no one has ever done anything,” local resident Pasquale Barbieri said.
Residents were hampered by thick mud, debris and stones in the area. Several cars were submerged on the shoreline, apparently pushed into the sea by the landslide and floods.
''It is the fault of our old politicians, who did not do preventive work on the mountains,” Ischia resident Ciro Buono said.
