During Harry and Snape’s first conversation in Potions class, Snape asks Harry “what would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?”
In Victorian flower language…Yes that’s a real thing.
Asphodel is a type of Lily that means “my regrets follow you to the grave” or “remembered beyond the tomb”, while wormwood means “absence”.
So if you combine the two together it roughly translates out to “I will always regret Lily’s death.”
