(5 Feb 2018) A record 28 French restaurants have been honoured with a three-star Michelin rating, the gastronomic world's most coveted prize.
The new editions to the coveted three-star club were Christophe Bacquie at the Castellet hotel and Marc Veyrat's La Maison des Bois.
They cement France's place as the world's biggest gastronomic hub, bringing its total number of three-starred restaurants to 28, ahead of Japan.
In total, France now boasts 621 starred restaurants.
Michelin France is considered the most prestigious of the publication's 31 global editions by the fine food establishment.
But although it's famed for making the fortunes of chefs, it's equally famous for breaking them with its system of rating top restaurants.
Monday's unveiling near Paris came amid questions on the guide's value after a top chef withdrew from the list.
The three-star Le Suquet was withdrawn at the request of Sebastien Bras, who complained about the unhuman stress levels linked to the accolade.
The revelation prompted widespread questions in the media over the usefulness of the famed index that classes top eateries from one to three-stars.
Michelin defended itself over claims that its stars reward pomp and presentation, instead of food, and of the unbearable scrutiny the guide brings.
This year, perhaps one of the due criticisms of the guide could be its dearth of female winners.
At a time where the scrutiny of the rewarding of women in professions is on the rise, France is proving to be an exception.
Of the 28 three-star restaurants, only one was run by a woman.
