They are coming from all directions, in groups, families and even village wise. It is a feast of cultural traditions and practices at Sammakka Saralamma Jathra held from 1st of February to 3rd February when the folk goddess Saralamma was brought from Kannepalli in Medaram of Telangana.
The tribals attending the Sammakka-Saralamma Jathara from all over central India is a feast for lovers of folk arts and tribal culture. Women and men carrying jaggery pieces on heads with smile on their lips and faces overjoyed with darshan of folk goddess Sammakka and Saralamma.
Devotees chanting laurels for Sammakka break coconuts, throw jaggery pieces, rice, and other trinkets for their tribal goddess who saved them from the swords of the then King Kakatiya armies. This is also an occasion for gaiety and fun. Tribals eat non-veg and also consume country liquor and other cheap IMFL. Men and women dance to the rhythm of the tribal drums and flutes.
Almost 1.6 crore devotees, along with Telangana, CM K Chandrasekhar Rao and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu had darshan of the forest deities. Managing this mammoth event was not an easy task.
Next Jathara will be conducted in the year 2020 and KCR has promised for Rs.200 crore infrastructure on a permanent basis. Beside this Telangana Government has promises to speed up the process for National festival status for Sammakka Jatharaa which had been pending for a long time.
